We recommend all visitors to Capileira to get to know the true spirit of the place and its people by getting lost in the town. In this way they will discover the magic of a unique place. Its steep and twisted streets, the white houses, the `terraos ́, a little rest in the `tinaos‘, talking with its people... makes you feel a special peace. Getting to the lower part of the town (Fuente Hondera) is like taking a trip back in time, and where the harmony of the human being with the geographical environment is experienced. The inhabitants of Capileira have been characterized throughout history by a scrupulous respect for the nature with which they live.
It is located in the House of Culture. Farming tools, handicrafts, fabrics, as well as some carvings from the 17th century and a series of lithographs from the same period in which Pedro Antonio de Alarcón made his journey through these lands are exhibited. Visiting hours: from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., except Monday
The church is part of the temples that the Catholic Monarchs ordered to be built to convert the Moors to Christianity. Work began in 1503 on the site of the Muslim mosque, but it was demolished in favor of a new one, the current one, in 1767. It is of Mudejar style. Ambrosio de Vico intervened in his works, by order of the archbishopric. It has a single nave and contains a 17th-century altarpiece in polychrome wood. The image of the Virgen de la Cabeza was donated to the Council of Capileira by the Catholic Monarchs. It stands out for being the only building in the town, old and unremodeled, that was built with a sloping roof made of Arabic tiles. The latter is made up of wooden trusses. The structure on which it rests is made up of thick load-bearing walls (around 80cm) of stone taken with mud, which have several buttresses. Visiting Hours: Worship Hours
Following the path that leads to Eras de Aldeire during a fifteen‘s minute walk, you reach the river that gives the ravine its name: the Poqueira River. The Poqueira River is, among all the Alpujarra rivers, the best used and the most productive of electrical energy. Its waters come from the glacial cirques at its head where the Río Seco, Caldera, Aguas Verdes, Majano and Caldereta lagoons are located.
This is one of the most privileged places in town in terms of views. From its railings, and looking to the south, we can see the other two towns that occupy the Poqueira Ravine: Bubión first and Pampaneira further down. On very clear days you can even see the African mountains. If we look in the opposite direction, to the north, we can see part of the Veleta, the opposite slope to the Sierra Nevada ski resort.
Capileira is a town where natural water sources abound. There is a nice walk known as the Water Route that
takes us through all of them. On this walk we will come across the following sources:
FUENTE DEL MINISTRO
On the way to Capileira on the road, we find this fountain on the right hand side on a slope. If you have to wash
your car this is a place where it is usual to do it.
FUENTE FRIA
It is the next fountain on the road, without entering the town. If you are going to drink its water, remember
that this fountain lives up to its name...
FUENTE DE LA ESCOPETA
Right in front of the Fuente Fría, in a small viewpoint on the inside of the curve, is this old fountain. It's been
years since it's given almost no water.
FUENTE DEL CALVARIO
In the Plaza del Calvario, in what could be the center of town, the fountain of the same name flows. Due to the
depth through which its water passes, its temperature does not vary excessively from winter to summer.
FUENTE DEL CEREZO
In the middle of one of the steepest slopes of the town called of Calle del Cerezo, there is a fountain in which
the economic activity of the town can be seen: next to the fountain for the people we find a basin for the
animals, a watering hole.
FUENTE HONDERA
This fountain is located in "El Tajo del Diablo" Fuente de la Pileta. If you go further down the park you will see a
fountain that is practically at ground level, the Fuente de la Pileta.
We are aware of both the scarcity of natural resources and the environmental impact generated by the provision of tourist services.
This awareness is precisely what forces us to implement and maintain an environmental policy consistent with sustainable tourism.
This will also result in better customer service and a more complete and comprehensive management policy. At this point, we must point out the
Park's recently obtained accreditation as an information point, as well as our participation in other discussion forums on environmental matters.
For this reason, we are always looking for ways to contribute as an active part to the protection of the Sierra Nevada Natural Area, the place where
we carry out our activity.
All these initiatives have subsequently concluded with obtaining the accreditation of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas (CETS). This letter is an initiative of the EUROPARC Federation whose global objective is to promote the development of tourism in terms of sustainability in the protected natural areas of Europe. The CETS is a method and a voluntary commitment to apply the principles of sustainable tourism, guiding managers of protected natural areas and companies to define their strategies in a participatory manner. This accreditation entails the fulfillment of several objectives and the commitment to maintain them.
